1 cup dry lentil well rinsed

 

2 1/2 cups water

​

1 tsp dried basil leaves

​

1/2 tsp sea salt

​

1/2 tsp ground pepper

1 tbsp olive oil

​

1 jalapeno seeded and finely chopped

​

1/2 medium sweet onion diced

​

1 medium carrot peeled and diced

​

1 tbsp soy sauce

​

3/4 cup rolled oats finely ground

3/4 cup breadcrumbs

Highlights & Tips

When making your lentil patties you want to make sure you rinse your lentils and discard any pits.

Using a food processor is a great help in the kitchen.  You can get your ingredients all chopped up and mixed well when making dishes like burgers.  This will help save you time vs manual chopping.

Plate Presentation

When plating a burger its fun to top it off with an olive or small gherkin pickle using a sandwich bamboo skewer.  This adds flare to the sandwich.

Serve the burger with a spear pickle, picked red onion and a grain mustard.  You can the burger toppings on the plate or on a separate plate for people to create their own masterpiece.

Budget Tips

Purchase your lentils in bulk if you can this will save you money.  If you don't have space you can order them online which will usually save a little money. 

 

Buying dried lentils & rolled oats from your bulk section of the grocery store is another great way to reduce your overall cost.

Storage Recommendations

​

To store your left over burger patties its best to use wax paper in between your burgers while stacking them up then place them in a freezer zip lock bag.  

​

You can keep your fresh patties in the refrigerator up to 3-4 days but it's best to freeze if you won't be using them within the next few days of making them.

Food Combinations

If you want to impress your guests or just your palate serve your burger with pickled red onions.  This will add zip to your burger and a flash of color that will brighten this dish!

Pickled product are also a great food that is low in calories but adds a ton of flavor to foods or can be eaten as snacks by themselves!

What to do with left over's or extra product?

As luck would have it dried lentil last a very long time.  Dried beans are usually good for one year in storage if stored in a dry cool place in your home.

Keep your dried lentils in an air tight sealed container in a dry cool place and you can use them up as needed for a long time.

DIRECTIONS

Bring the water to a boil in a medium sauce pan.  Add the lentils once the water is boiling along with the salt.  Reduce to heat to simmer and cook for 45 minutes.

Place your diced onion in a small saute pan over medium heat and cook 1-2 minutes.  Add the carrots and jalapeno and cook for another 2-3 minutes.  Then set aside.

Grind your rolled oats in a food processor to get a fine texture.  This will allow for a smooth texture and the ingredients will blend well together.

In a medium mixing bowl mix the cooked ingredients with the pepper, soy sauce, basil, oats and breadcrumbs.  Blend all ingredients in the food processor if you want a smoother texture

Form the mixture into patties, this should make 8-10 burger patties.  You can cook your burgers in a pan on the stove top over medium heat for 2-3 minutes on each side or cook in the oven for 15 minutes at 375 degrees.  Once your burgers are cooked you can assemble them with your favorite toppings, sliced tomato, lettuce, pickled red onions, pickles just to name a few!  enjoy
